Samenvatting

This study explores the profound influence of social media on public opinion and policy formulation, particularly through the lens of environmental issues. Social media platforms have emerged as critical arenas for public discourse, enabling citizens to share information, mobilize support, and express concerns regarding environmental matters. The paper presents case studies from various environmental campaigns, including movements focused on climate change, deforestation, and pollution. By analyzing the dynamics of social media interactions, we uncover how platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram shape narratives, foster community engagement, and amplify the voices of activists and organizations. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of social media metrics with qualitative interviews from key stakeholders in environmental advocacy. Findings reveal that social media not only influences public perceptions of environmental challenges but also pressures policymakers to respond more effectively to constituents’ concerns. Moreover, the study highlights the role of misinformation and echo chambers in shaping public opinion, suggesting that while social media can drive positive change, it can also perpetuate divisive narratives. The implications of this research underscore the necessity for both environmental advocates and policymakers to navigate the complex social media landscape, leveraging its strengths while mitigating its potential pitfalls. Ultimately, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of how social media acts as a catalyst for environmental advocacy and policy change, providing insights that are essential for future research and action in the field of environmental governance.
